The house has been in the family for one century.
The Surfcastle was built in 1920 by the family Boticas. This amazing property took around two years to build, which means that the house was ready in 1922. The creator was a Portuguese architect named José Rodrigues Prieto, who teamed up with a builder named Jaime Santos. For many years, this was the only house in Baleal Beach, and nowadays, it is still visible from many miles away!
In 1942, the house was bought by Joao Castanheira and became his family holiday house for many decades.
In 2006, Joao and Pedro decided to transform this vintage property into a surf house that would host guests from many different countries and cultures. They both left their jobs to dedicate their lives exclusively to the Surfcastle. The first step was to refurbish the main house and set up an online web page. Then, we focused on setting up a surf school with the best materials and cutting-edge surf teachers.
THE SURFCASTLE
The Surfcastle opened its doors on the 1st of April 2007. Our first guest was a Hawaiian pro surfer named Sage Huls. He was entering a (WQS) in Peniche and liked our spot! This was the best kick-off for an encouraging season, and soon after that, we started tutoring our guests on the art of surfing. Year after year, we share our local knowledge of our great surf spots and this great house with many surfers & beach lovers from many different countries.
